You may spend some nice days in a small town’s new spa of high standard if you visit the thermal baths of Barcs. The water here is officially not healing water yet, but the experience of the residents of Barcs is that the water has a beneficial result against motor disorders.
History
Archeologists found here finds from the Roman Ages. The first Hungarian source which mentioned the name of Barcs dates back to the 14C. This time it was the property of the queen. When the Turks invaded Hungary, Barcs became part of the Ottoman Empire, and this land became deserted. In the 17C György Széchenyi, the archbishop of Kalocsa bought this land and settled here Croatian and German people. Barcs had developed very quickly, and soon became an oppidium, which means a small town with some privileges. In the 19C more develops were made after the railway was laid down and the regulation of the River Dráva. Some industrial unites and repositories were built.
Barcs has a special small-townish atmosphere. Tourism and the new spa complex play an important role in the everyday life of the town.
Place of interest
After refreshing your self in the spa, you should take a walk in the old town center. The former repositories still remain. For example, in the old grain elevator you can visit the Folk Museum of Barcs. There are interesting displays about the culture of different nations of this land.
You can see some old castles around Barcs, like the castle of the Széchenyi, Seeman and the Kremsier families. These great buildings are worth the visit, so you can get an idea about how rich noble families lived here before.
The surrounding land is rich in natural beauties, so it is worth to explore by a short trip.
