Orosháza – Gyopáros spa resort
According to contemporary official records, notes in old newspapers / 1869-1900-1958 / The important result of the decades after 'The Compromise of 1867' was the development and establishment of Gyopárosfürdő near Orosháza./ 3 km. / A settlement-part on the shore of the lake was already populated: it was Orosháza-Gyopárhalma.According to the notes it was founded in 1846.The 'surplus' of the population of Orosháza village made up the inhabitants of this part. The boundary of Gyopárhalma: Rákóczitelep, the surfaced road, Szentetornya and Gyopárosfürdő.Its streets are the followings: Határ utca, Temető dűlő, Középlak, Csőszház dűlő, Kertészház dűlő.According to the official records this area belonged to Margit Károlyi countess- 'Common men' bought the distributed lands. It was used as a kitchen garden then it was planted with grapes. This latter is proved by the fact that in 1873 a leader of a community of wine growners was elected.According to the evidence of the contemporary official records in 1892 Gyopárhalma already had 736 inhabitants. When talking about Gyopáros lake I have to mention the curative effect of the water. The visiting bathers experienced this curative effect at the end of the 1960s.
The water of the lake was first used for retting of hemp and horse bathing by the inhabitants in the neighbourhood and the local peasants. Using the lake as a bath was initiated by Elek László, who was already an excellent doctor of Orosháza at that time.It was the year of 1869 when he started the development of high standard of the bath and he continued its organising throughout decades. On the basis of the above mentioned popular experiences his first action was the chemical analysis of the water.Quoted from contemporary notes:'...in this water there are particles that are so effective in cure that omission of it and not using it for the suffering mankind would be regarded as a deservedly sinful negligence.' In 1870 the building of the bath started. Unfortunately the body of the representatives of the village secluded itself from the expenses connected with the lake and they decided that ’Gyopáros would remain a rettery’. But they allowed the lake to be used for bathing, too. At that time contemporary media delt with the case of Gyopáros a lot.So in the 1880s Gyopáros became a visited and widely known bath.Orosháza and its neighbourhood , even the near inhabitants of the county increasingly realised the excellent curative effect of the water of the lake. The turnover of the bath quickened , therefore in 1885 the body of representatives of the village decided to have some dressing cabines made for women.
The water of the lake was sent to the National Analytical Institute for an advisory opinion.Under its influence a decision was made: ’ The body of representatives hereby declares the bath character of the lake.’ Between 1886 and 1893 the bath started an intensive development.
The next step was to separate retting and horse bathing. The turnover increased, new dressing cabins were built. Unfortunately in 1893 and in the next years the bath declined. Visits became few and far between. The surrounding of the bath was neglected. The reeds became numerous near the lake shore. It smelt. So the demanding guests started to disregard the bath-reported the contemporary media. The income from the bath decreased. The leaders of the village started to realise slowly but surely that although at the cost of investment but the situation needs improvement. As a ’popular’ bath it continued its prospering. The leaders decided to clear the reeds, to clean the lake bed and to landscape the area near the lake.Leasing-out was advertised. But there was no offer though the magistracy of the village ’hoped for money from the tenants.’The plan failed. In the first years of the century the village had the cleaning of the lake bed and the clearing of the reeds done .At last the magistracy devoted a considerable amount of money to Gyopáros. It took the bath in its own hands. It brought more serious income and this income was turned into development. The bath that now was in the hands of the village took on a character of high standard in 1906.
The building of the shore was started with the following steps:1.The lake was excavated to 2 metres deep. 2. A big landscaping and afforestation started. 3. The village hotel with 40 guestrooms was built.1906 is a notable date in the life of Gyopáros. The Orosháza-Szentes railway line was opened. It touched Gyopáros, too.It made the Orosháza-Gyopáros special train possible. In 1908 the village had an artesian well bored in the wooded park. In 1909-which was the next year- a small post-office was opened in Gyopáros. The bath doctor service was launched which paid a big attention to the sanitarian demands of the bath. This list increased the attendance of the bath by leaps and bounds. The popularity of the bath spread in the village and in its neighbourhood. It increased the income of the bath. Unfortunately the development was retarded by World War I.The building, expansion stagnated. From 1925 the development ran up again.Namely: 1. The light- railway was built from Orosháza small station to Gyopáros.2.The establishment of the so called’ Heros’ Park’ was started on the north part of the lake shore.Trees and bushes –one more beautiful than the other-were planted here.3. Nice holiday homes, villas were built on the south shore. But World War II caused a new retardation in the life of our loved bath.
In 1958 Gyopáros started a significant development again. The building of the new pool was started with the help of serious investments and it resulted in building of new cabins.

All kinds of physiotherapeutic treatments can be found in the Physico- and Balneotherapeutic Centre:balneotherapeutic, electrotherapeutic and mechanotherapeutic treatments are available in the pleasant building-complex.The several balneo- and hydrotherapeutic medical treatments increase the excellent curative effect of the water. Thanks to the special composition of the Gyopáros medical water, taking water is extremely suitable for curing rheumatic pains, arthritis, muscle- and tendon inflammation and neuritis. It can be applied successfully in post rehabilitative treatment of sprains, dislocations, fractures and in restoration of damaged functions.
During the medical water treatment under-water jet massage as well as hydromassage is used to stimulate the injured muscles. In the case of a slipped disc, diskopathy, spinal column calcinosis and other disorders of the spinal column the weigh-bath is an excellent therapy.
Electrotherapeutic treatments make up the other group of treatments in the Gyopáros Physio- and Balneotherapeutic Centre. In the course of them the specialists use the mechanical and heat effects of different current strengths to cure several diseases. These electrotherapeutic treatments are excellent supplements of the bath cure as well as the balneo- and hydrotherapeutic treatments.Without aiming at completeness we list some typical electrotherapeutic treatments:galvanic-type treatments, TENS, interference treatments, iontophoresis, magnetotherapy, kryotherapy, infra- and Evolite- light therapy and laser-acupuncture therapy.Mechanotherapeutic treatments help the guests' fast recovery in the Physio- and Balneotherapeutic Centre. A basic treatment is physiotherapy. The lack of exercise is not the only reason but at the same time can be an aggravating factor in case of locomotor disorders.Physiotherapy is a special kinesitherapy, which people learn individually with the help of a physiotherapist. The aim of the treatment is to restore the active functions and to set up a plan for regular exercise. There is dry, underwater, active and passive physiotherapy and the patients take part in the individual programmes according to the type and measure of their diseases in the centre.Several massages complete the effects of the electrotherapeutic treatments and the treatments that are based on the medical water.Massage restores the elasticity of the skin, helps the absorption of roughage from the under-skin connective tissues and has a general analgesic and sedative effect.
The full service is as important in the Physio- and Balneotherapeutic Centre as the standard of curative treatments. To assure the guests a pleasant stay a swimming-pool, a sauna and solarium are available during and after the treatments.
Therapy-Hydrotherapy
This treatment works on the body by using the physical energies of water such as its temperature, lift, pressure and drag. The guests can find the tangentor-underwater stream-massage- the weigh- bath, the arm-, leg and complete- body hot-bath and the eddy-bath among our available treatments. The tangentor is a type of massage carried out in a bath filled up with mineral water.A technician carries out the massage with a stream whose pressure is adjustable and which comes out of a pipe which has a control head with an adjustable diameter.
The flow of the mixture of water and air into the complete-body hot-bath works on the basis of an adjustable programme. The adjustable programme which increases from the periphery towards the heart and is repeated in waves is highly recommended and the most popular form in this bath.
The arm-and leg hot-bath treats either the forearm and hand or the calf and foot selectively. So treatments of these parts of the body can be carried out even in cases when the guests are not allowed to go into the pool because of their blood-pressure or heart problems.
The weigh-bath is a treatment in the pool which was established especially for this reason. Here the guests hang down on the point prescribed by a doctor. There is also a prescribed counterweight attached to the guest fixed to the waist or ankles. The guests hang into the pool without holding and it assures the desired stretching effect.
Therapy-Balneotherapy
These treatments try to use the curative effect of the healthy water. This effect is based on the chemical composition of the water. In the first place we use the high mineral content of the water extracted from deep underground but we also create our own mixes such as the carbonic bath.Besides the medical water pools it is also possible to have a bath in the tub-bath. It creates an opportunity to treat guests who can not go into the public pools because of their diseases.
The natural mineral water is extracted from 500 m depth and has temperatures of 40-50 degrees Celsius. This water is released into the pools after cooling to 35-36 degrees Celsius. This temperature which is similar to the body temperature is ideal for a pleasant bath.Even exercise can be done without any burden at this temperature so the positive effect can intensify the freshening up and healing process.
The hydrogen-carbonate salts of alkali- and alkali earth metals are important constituents in the composition of the mineral water. These salts have an intensive effect on the body and gives the mineral water its curative properties..Because of its sodium content the water is suitable for curing gynaecological diseases but it also eases rheumatic complaints.
Besides the mineral salts the iodine content of the water shows a great effect in the remission of locomotion.
The calcium-, magnesium hydrogencarbonate salts of the water have shown positive results against the diseases of circulatory organs. The effect of them is intensified and completed by the lime content of the water.
Because of its iron content it can be well applied in case of chronic gynaecological inflammations and because of the strong skin-stimulating effect of the iron it is suitable to cure dermatosis, too.Because of its common salt content it has a strong stimulating effect on the skin so it can aid the several functions of the body through the nervous system.
Therapy - Electrotherapy
The curative effect of the electric current is extremely widely used in our baths.Hundreds of programmes are available within the scope of the treatments of low- medium- and high frequency so that in cases diagnosed by doctors the best types of currents can be produced. With the help of the physiotherapeutic assistants almost all types of treatments are available in our baths for the guests looking to recover their health..
