The Damjanich Baths is situated by the side of River Tisza. The complex has swimming pools and thermal pools. The water contains alkali-hydrogen-carbonic and iodide thus it is mostly recommended for those who have some kind of motor disease or rheumatism.

History

The first source which mentioned the name of Szolnok dates back to the 11C. It got its name after its first bailiff. During the early middle ages it was an administrative center.

In the 13C the town became deserted after the attacks of the Tatar troops. Szolnok recovered quickly and in the 15C it was already a town with some privileges. It became an important trade center due to the road which went through the town. This commercial route was the traditional way to transport salt from Transylvania to Buda.

In the 20C, during the communist era the industrial life of Szolnok was extremely developed. Many people migrated to the town in hope to work in the factories. New block-houses were built for the new settlers.

Place of interest

After refreshing your self in the spa you should take walk in Szolnok to see some imposing, old buildings, interesting exhibitions, historically and cultural monuments.

First take a walk to the center of the town. The parish church was built in baroque style. The inside of the temple has a marvellous design.

The old railway station was opened in 1847. It is the oldest railway station in Hungary. If you are interested in the history of transportation you should visit the only airplane museum of Hungary in Szolnok.

If you are interested in folk culture and traditions you should visit the János Damjanich Museum for some interesting displays or the old fisherman’s house where you can see how fishermen lived here before in the 18C.

If you like fine arts, don’t miss to see the displays in the pavilions of the Artists’ Colony of Szolnok or the exhibitions of the Town Gallery.

Besides these Szolnok has some beautiful, peaceful parks where you can take a pleasant walk after refreshing your self in the spa.
