Guide to the Castle Bath Gyula is a resort and spa city situated in the south-east part of the country, 200 kms from Budapest, with a population of 35 thousand. Its still visitable brick castle built between 1405 and 1445 made Gyula the centre of the area and is the only brick castle remained intact in Central Europe. Our Castle Bath, which is probable the most beautiful spa of Hungary, was built in the castle park of 8.5 hectares of the Almásy Castle and today is a nature reserve. During constructing the buildings and the pools a priority was that the construction would not affect the trees of the castle park and the guests of the spa would not get crowded in one place. With the advantageous location of the pools we achieved that it is possible to find a calm relaxing place even if ten thousand guests per day visit the area of the spa. The water of our castle bath is spa water containing alcali-hydrogene-carbonate-chloride. Owing to its high mineral contents it has brownish colour. We get our waters from six deep wells, among which the deepest one is 2500 m. The minister of health declared the 72 oC water of the bath to be medicated water in 1969, the bath to be spa in 1971 and the environment of the spa to be health-resort in 1985. The water can use for healing with excellent efficiency locomotive disorders, local nervous diathesis, rehabilitating treatments after accidents and phlogistic gynaecological problems. 50-m deck-level swimming pool
The newest and most modern deck-level swimming pool of the Southern-Great-Plain, together with the connecting 25-m learning pool with its completely renewed building-system, complement the European-level service range of the Castle Bath of Gyula. The 25-m pool has obtained new tile casing and new roof structure; the 50-m pool has been reconstructed into a deck-level pool, and its changing room has been enlarged. Within the Swimming Pool, swimming championships, water polo matches and entertaining programs await the visitors. Thanks to its most modern one-pitch roofing, it is perfectly suitable for arranging sport events at wintertime, too.
25-m learning pool
In the 26-28 °C deck-level pool (0.9-1.1 meter deep) - as it is suggested by its name - swimming training takes place. From the kindergarten-age to the adulthood, four swimming instructors are on the service of the guests wishing to learn. Since the pool is roofed, therefore the guests desiring swimming can use it all year.
Pool with slide
The pool of 24-26 oC (0.95-1.35 m deep) with stretched water surface is the families' real favourite. Walking into the pool one can feel that the deepness of the water is permanently increasing thus it is suitable not only for playing ball but also for swimming. For the children's utmost pleasure, we have constructed a new, modern double slide in addition to the traditional small slide at the pool. The kamikaze slide and the giant slide with 100 m long track can be used free and may be approached almost from the water. Those parents wishing to watch their children can relax, sun-bathing on the benches located on the edge of the pool. Opening hours of the pool: from 1st May till the end of September.
Wave pool
The newest and most modern wave bath of Hungary, a unique in the South Great Plain is ideal for all age-groups. The almost 1 m waves give a delightful experience, entertainment. An warning sign calls the attention of the guests for the waving that lasts 5 minutes. The shallowest part of the pool is 45 cm, the deepest is 2.2 m, so it is excellent playing and family pool.
Children's pools
For the undisturbed amusement of the families with small children, it is necessary to have a small pool, a so called "splasher", not dependent on the weather and controllable by the parents. We, first in Hungary, have built for the age-group between 2-10 not only a "splasher" but a 400 m2 playground - naturally in water. The water paradise ensures genuine amusement for children, where they can use 10 sorts of toys - pleasure elements. The "mini wellness" twice larger in its size and fourth in its capacity has heated and modern water clarifying plant. The fountain, which is an inverse pool, provides a unique entertainment. Here more hundred springing water streams gives unforgettable pleasure for the children.

By the services of the Castle Bath you are able to organise your day in a way that you can take home by the evening the joy of spiritual and physical rejuvenation. All of the new services of the Castle Bath pursue this objective. It is a wonderful sensation to sit in the healing water after an intensive massage, which has a beneficial effect for locomotive disorders, local nerve-diseases, rehabilitation treatment following accidents. Above the pleasure-pool on the gallery and the relaxing terraces reading make the distraction comlete. In summers our guests may indulge in sun-bathing on the bathing terrace and the wellness-park. In the largest covered pleasure pool of the South Great Plain many modern apparatuses are in the service of the guests’ relaxion, distraction and preservation of health: neck shower, whirling bath, standing massage, water prickly, sweeping corridor, hydromassage on sitting bench, lying effervescent bath an Scoth shower. The excellent warmed water of the pleasure-pool has got first-class water quality, its most modern and effective water-purifying technology is unique in Hungary. The wellness centre is open on every day of the year, night bathing makes more pleasurable the Friday and Saturday evenings for our welcomed guests.
Shadowing pool
The spa pool of 35-37 oC (0.8-1.25 m deep) is effective especially for treatment of locomotive disorders, muscular pains, rehabilitating treatment after accidents, operations. We do not recommend, however, the spa water to those having weak heart or suffering from circulatory disorders because of its high temperature. The pool got new cover in 2002 and for the more pleasant relaxation it has been completed with two neck showers and two massaging devices. In the cover of the pool's environment we incorporated the sub-buildings of the corridor for winter exit.
Operation of the pool depends on the weather, usually the guests can use it from the middle of May till the end of October.
Massaging pool
The spa water of 31-34 oC (0.9-1.45 m deep) is suitable for treating complaints connecting to the neck and shoulder beside the effects acquainted already. The 12 wide, energetic water-flows coming from upwards have strong massage-effect on the frequently tensing muscular-groups of the neck and the shoulders. The water flows out from wide blast-pipe with great intensity from upwards. After the strong top massage the tensed muscles relax, the pains in the shoulders and neck decrease or pass away.
In 2002 the most favourite pool of the Castle Bath received the water mushroom, which were included also in the original plans, and, of course, four more massaging devices with two neck showers. Both the shading roof and the supporting wall of the newly covered pool have got a painting in harmony with the flag of the Castle Bath.
Similarly to the previous two pools its operation depends on the weather, usually from the middle of May till the end of October.
Effervescent bath pool
The spa water of 32-35 oC (0.8-1.25 m deep) can be used mainly for muscular pains and articular complaints with excellent effect. The 12 effervescent heads and the 4 hydro-massage heads give a delightful experience to all age-groups. The bubbles flowing upwards cause special delight during bathing. The so called massage wall gives the optimum of the experience and the effect. The unified intensive flowing of the water and air at different levels provides the bathing guests with unforgettable experiences beside the advantageous therapeutic effect. The blast-pipes are massaging all parts of the body. The opening hours are similar to that of the shadowing pool from the middle of May till the end of October.
"Octopus" thermal pool
The indoor-outdoor pool opening from the relaxing section of the 'Riding Hall' is filled with 35-37 °C medicinal water (0.9 - 1.1 meter deep). The pool leads to a park of nature protection environ, where the guests can relax in a beautiful environment in the shadow of evergreens. The thermal pool reminding of the tentacles of an octopus - considering its shape - is very popular amongst the guests, since, within the pool operating also in winters, the ambient cool weather cannot be felt even in the outdoor part. Thermal swimming pool in the 'Riding Hall'
The thermal water of 28-30 oC (1.2-1.6 meter deep) is popular amongst the guests desiring healing, but lightly sporting and taking exercises. The water of the 20-meter long pool is medicinal water, thus its colour is reddish brown. Exercising the aching, bound joints is much easier and painless in thermal water; we recommend it especially for the guests who can swim well, in the case of abrasive spinal, sciatic and shoulder joint diseases. It is available all year for the guests. The recommended duration and frequency of bathing is 2 x 30 minutes a day, please consult a physician for your case.
"Butterfly" thermal pool
The butterfly-shaped 34-35 °C thermal pool (0.9-1.1 meter deep) has been formed in the roofed part of the 'Riding Hall'. The pool reminding of a butterfly viewed from above is open all year. For our physically impaired guests, a disabled access elevator operating in the water provides the possibility for the healing. The pool of neutral temperature water is the most adequate for the guests having cardiovascular diseases. Thermal pool I. of the 'Riding Hall'
We recommend the 36-38 °C thermal pool (1 meter deep) for the patients having locomotory diseases, chronic gynaecological diseases, muscular pain, as well as, for follow-up rehabilitation treatments. Due to its high water temperature, however, this pool is contraindicated for patients having heart diseases and high blood pressure. Thermal pool II. of the 'Riding Hall'
The 34-35 °C thermal water (1 meter deep) is popular amongst the patients desiring healing and regenerating, who cannot use the thermal pool I. of the 'Riding Hall' because of its high temperature. It is also open all year. The recommended duration of bathing is 2 x 30 minutes a day; please consult a physician for your case.
Paddling pool
The 34-35 °C paddling pool (0.3-0.35 meter deep) provides the appropriate bathing possibility for the families with children under 10. While the parents enjoy the thermal pools, their child can play under supervision in the paddling pool of the 'Riding Hall'. The paddling pool is open all year.
Weight bath pool
The spa pool of 34-36 oC can be found at our medical department. The patients visiting our institution can use this service only by of physician's referral. From weight bath treatment we can expect that vertebral disks, small nervous roots being under pressure get released from load, one can get rid of small joint dislocation of smaller vertebrae, it moderates the atrophy of attachments and muscles, releases contracture and reduces chronic inflammatory proceedings. The specialists carry out the treatment as a cure of 10-15 occasions by neck or armpit support using gradually increasing weights.
Walking pool
The spa pool of 34-36 oC, similarly to the weight bath pool, can be found at the medical department. Treatments
Pool bath
This is the most generally required rehabilitating treatment form, the efficiency of which mainly comes from the fact that the liquid relatively decreases the weight of the body (thanks to the upward pressure) and thus the motion becomes easier even for those able to move only with difficulties. Owing to the hot temperature of the water the veins and arteries dilate, which decreases the blood pressure to a certain degree, intensifies, however, the material exchange of the tissues, improves the uptake of the nutritive materials of the tissues and the absorption of the roughage, inflammatory products. We cannot neglect also the effects of the mineral materials existing in the water. The recommended bathing time is from 30 minutes till three times 30 minutes depending on the proposal of the physician.
Massage therapy
It belongs to the most ancient treatments, was acknowledged as medical treatment in India even in 4000 B.C. As a primary impact it intensifies the circulation of the connective tissues and the muscular system under the skin, owing to which the flexibility of the skin, the blood supply of the muscles and the locomotive extension improve. As a result of the carbonic acid bath the surface arteries and veins are dilating, the circulation is improving in the connecting tissues, muscles under the skin. It leads to decrease in the blood pressure of the arteries (it lasts for longer time during series-treatment), owing to which the operation of the heart improves and the minute capacity increases. Consequently the own circulation of the heart and the material exchange improve.

Remedial gymnastics under water:

Weight bath:
By using the upward pressure of the water we can get the spine, the hip and the knee to be extended. Release of the vertebral disks, smaller nervous roots, cessation of smaller vertabra or small joints dislocations, moderation of taenia and muscle atrophy, release of contractures and decrease in chronic inflammatory processes can be expected from the weight bath. Mud-cure
In the Castle Bath of Gyula the treatment is carried out with inorganic mud from the River Maros. The biological effect of the mud comes from its chemical and physical properties. Its physical effects are the heat effect, the hydrostatic pressure and the stimulating effect. The biological effect of heat and hydrostatic pressure is similar to the effect mechanism of the thermal water with the difference that the heat effect and the pressure of the mud is much more expressive than that of the water. The stimulation is provided by organic and inorganic materials. The mud is finely granulated therefore its heat holding capacity is high. It gives the heat slowly to the body consequently our skin tolerates the heat at higher temperature than that of the hot water. We can tolerate mud of 42-45 oC well during mud-cure. Beside its deeply radiating heat effect it has general stimulating impact. We apply mud packing or partial mud-cure with cooling the head or the heart if necessary.

Galvanic therapy with four cells
A unified application of the hydrotherapy and the electrotherapy. The active agent of the cream is made of special fermentation in spa water, out of natural materials by bio-synthesis.
