History
The beginnings of Busko date back to the 12th Century, when a shepherds settlement arose around the St. Leonard Church. In 1185 the owner of Busko and its neighborhood – knight Deresław – brought Norbertan nuns to the town. Later he bequeathed his entire estate to them. From 1241, through the following several hundred years Busko was the property of the convent. In 1252 the town received from Boleslaw Wstydliwy a financial immunity, in which the king allowed the convent to exploit the brine. It is the first mention of using the mineral water found in Busko area.

In 1287 Busko received municipal rights from prince Leszek Czarny. Advantageous location of the town on the crossing trade routes contributed to the decision of king Władysław Jagiełło in 1412 to give the citizenry the privilege to organize weekly markets and two fairs per year. From then on the town flourished throughout the 15th and 16th Centuries. At that time it was famous for trade and cloth.
From the mid 18th Century wars and anti-middle-class policy of the aristocracy impoverished the town. A period of renewed economic boom was caused by the discovery of brine springs in 1776. Salt exploitation began, but soon it was abandoned due to unprofitable production. In 1808 doctor of medicine Mr. Winterfeld from Pińczów conducted the first research on the application of local waters in healing. First patients, called at that time “bath guests”, started to visit Busko. In 1819 the property of the Norbertan nuns was claimed by the government. After the fire of the town in 1820, Busko was taken on lease by gen. Feliks Rzewuski. Knowing the healing properties of the town’s mineral waters he commissioned building, with the help of a Warsaw company, a baths complex according to the design of known Italian architect Enrico Marconi. In 1828 as many as 202 guests were healing in Busko.
In 1836 the official opening of the health resort took place. Later, the resort was taken on lease by a company of Warsaw industrialists. In 1869 Busko was deprived of municipal rights by the tsar administration, but the health resort was still functioning. In 1880 the lease was taken over by doctor Andrzej Dobrzański. During the 15 years of his activity the resort grew and developed considerably. It then became one of the most popular health resorts, not only in Poland but also abroad.
During the First World War Busko found itself under the Austrian occupation. In 1915 it became the headquarters of the Stopnica district. A year later the town regained municipal rights. After the war, as early as in 1919 first patients started visiting the resort anew. In the interwar period the resort underwent intense development initiated by dr. Szymon Starkiewicz, and thanks to the community’s help the “Górka” sanatorium for children was built. During the Second World War the town became the place of numerous guerilla military operations: forces of the National Army assassinated the local Gestapo chief at the central town square. After the war, being in an agricultural region, the town functioned as administrative, trade, and service center for the surrounding villages. Nevertheless, the health resort remained the main factor in the town’s growth and development. Busko of today is a dynamically growing spa, administrative center, the capital of the Busko district. The surrounding villages constitute an agricultural region, where vegetable and fruit growing dominate, and where the most popular rural economic activity is rural tourism.

Sulphidic/hydrogen-sulphide water baths
The treatment profile of Busko is determined by the rich supplies of sulphidic/hydrogen-sulphide saline waters, containing dissolved hydrogen sulfide, and hydrosulfide and sulphuric ions. The most popular form of sulfide water application are bathtub baths. The sulphur penetrates into the human skin, and it is also let into the organism through the respiratory tract together with the inhaled air. Sulfide waters exert local as well as overall effect on skin. In low concentration they increase keratoplasticity – they facilitate creation of elastic cuticle, while in high concentration they exhibit keratolytic properties – they soften and peel the cuticle. Sulfide water baths raise the level of hemoglobine and erythrocytes in blood. Also, a decrease in uric acid concentration can be observed in patients suffering from gout, and a decrease of glucose level in patients suffering from diabetes. The levels of cholesterol and triglycerides decrease as well. Moreover, sulfide waters exhibit bactericidal, antiparasitic and fungicidal properties, they stop arteriosclerotic processes and facilitate metabolism. Combining thermal action and a direct sulphur effect, the waters improve blood supply of joints and reduce articulatory pains. Sulfide waters are recommended especially in degenerative diseases of motor organs. Good effects can be achieved in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, rigid spinal arthritis, and gout; also after surgery related to a degenerative state of hip joints. As to nervous system diseases, the treatment includes neuralgias, neurititis during final stages of disease, discopathy, spinal pains, states after surgery related to discopathy, etc. In dermatology, sulfide waters are used in treatment of psoriasis and its variations, seborrheal types of eczema, dermatitis, cuticle callosity disorder, some types of mycosis, sclerodermia, etc. Sulfide waters are indicated to be employed in treatment of peripheral circulation disorder, especially concerning the lower limbs. Good effects can be achieved in treatment of chronic poisonings with heavy metals (mercury, lead). Likewise, positive effects can be observed in orthopaedics, in treatment of posttraumatic states of joints and bones.

Kinesic Therapy
Gymnastics – kinesic therapy is the foundation of the rehabilitation.
Effect of the exercises on the human body
Movement and work are factors which are responsible for the development and growth of our organs, especially the motor organ.
JOINTS AND BONES - prophylactic exercises keep full range of movement in the joint, and in cases of mobility constraints they can reduce such constraints. Moreover, exercises and movements shape the articular surfaces. As to the soft parts of the joint, the articular capsule, and the ligaments, they determine their elasticity and resilience. Immobility leads to decalcification of bones, disorders of their blood supply and pains.
MUSCLES – the exercises shape healthy muscles, increasing their mass and strength. In case of strokes or pareses properly conducted exercises can reactivate muscles and improve their strength. Besides, movement and exercises keep correct length and elasticity of muscles.
NERVOUS SYSTEM – passive movement, changing the position of a limb and stretching the articular capsule, acts as a stimulus for the nervous system. The active exercises play the role of a stimulus for the central nervous system, developing motor memory, and the speed and easiness of reacting to external stimuli. Additionally, special exercises can eliminate or reduce balance disorders and movement coordination disorders.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM – elastic plumonary tissue and respiratory muscles easily subject to the effects of the exercises. Through a proper application of the exercises a patient can be taught how to breathe correctly, and increase the effective capacity of his/her lungs, which is the main factor in regulating the level of oxidization of the circulating blood. Proper respiratory performance, elastic and resilient plumonary tissue, and strong respiratory muscles shape the chest and posture.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM – properly dosed exercises, movement, and work increase efficiency and performance of the circulatory system, while lack of exercise, movement and effort lead to just the opposite. In disorders and pathologic changes of the circulatory system, adapting it to the basic daily activity and work can be achieved by graduated exercises. Exercises and movement, due to the muscular work, improve the efficiency of the peripheral circulatory system. They facilitate the inflow of the arterial blood to the periphery, but most of all they support the outflow of the venous blood and lymph.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM AND GENITOURINARY SYSTEM – exercises and movement also increase performance of the smooth muscles, and the efficiency of abdominal and pelvic organs. Due to the application of proper exercises we can improve the stomach and intestines function, and indirectly improve the performance of liver and kidneys. Exercises and movement prevent constipation and deposition of urine in urinary tracts, and thus they prevent infection and creation of uroliths.
