History

In the VI and VII century, the Slavonic settlement of Palupe was where now Połczyn Zdrój is located. An early Middle Ages hill fort may be seen some 3 km from the town.

The fort with its center close to the Wogra River was standing on the Salt Trail plied by traders who carried salt and amber from Kołobrzeg to Wielkopolska. Municipal rights on Brandenburg law were established in ca.1335.

Bad Polzin

Between the XIIth and the XIIIth century, Połczyn Zdrój was part of the Białogard County which was the border between Western Pomorze and Poland, then being unified. In about 1290, prince Bogusław IV started in Połczyn a construction of a castle to serve as a border watchpost.

In the XIVth century, Pomorze prince Warcisław IV gave Połczyn settlement to the Wedel nobles. The new town owners did their best to ensure its prosperity. They became closely related to the new principality rulers and received multiple possessions and offices in return.

The first document that mentions the name of the town – Hasse von Wedel’s letter of submission to prince Ludwik Wittelsbach – is dated at that period (1337). This is why the year 1337 is commonly accepted as the beginning of the town.

Połczyn received its first coat of arms during the Wedel family reign. It included a portion of a wineyard with three wineyeard bushes. This was a reference to the wineyard on the slopes of the Wogra river valley. Most likely in 1374 the Wedel nobles sold the town to another family of nobles – the Manteuffels. A dominant figure among Połczyn owners was Kurt von Manteuffel in the early XVIth century, who built up the local castle, founded three glassworks – in Lipa, Kłoków and Kłokówek – to manufacture window glass and also stained glass for, among others, the newly built Buślary church. It was he who in 1515 introduced the Lubeck law into town to protect the rights of the townfolk, mainly related to a more beneficial rules of property inheritance.

Kurt von Manteuffel gave Połczyn a new coat of arms. His family coat of arms, a red cross bar on the silver background, together with the coat of arms the town was given by the first owners. The coat of arms then created continues to the present day.

In the next centuries, the town was plundered by soldiers of many armies. More economic prosperity was to arrive only towards the end of the XVIIIth, and then in the early XXth century.. There were as many as four flour mills, one sawmill, and one fullery on the Wogra River. Brewing trade, shoemaking, and tailoring were then the mark of the town.

The town school was founded in the 1670s; it was the place where young people learned to play violin and clavichord. It was supported by the local preacher – Joachim Titel. It was he who first paid attention to therapeutic nature of mineral water springs discovered in 1688. Patients arrived into town ever since. In 1705 Jakub von Krockow junior (a descedant of the first owner of the town) built the first rest home. Growing importance of the health resort in northern Europe was why the Połczyn-Szczecin road was built in 1851, to be followed in 1903 by the railway line to Berlin.

Even though the health resort was located far away from major cities and on the outskirts of the state, it was nonetheless visited by distinguished guests. As early as in 1712, the town was visisted for more than a month by prince Ferdinand of Kurland. Between 1870 and 1908, curatory facilities were built that still exist today: „Irena”, „Lechia”, „Poznanianka”, „Gryf”,”Borkowo”, „Podhale”.

In around 1857, dr Lehman, working then at the town hospital, was the first to apply therapeutic mud for rheumatism and osteoarthritis. Curatory properties of mud were then valued very high.

Before WW I, the largest number of patients – 4126 – was noted in 1913, and between the wars – in 1920, when the resort was visited by 6316 patients. Adequate advertising and the name – Bad Polzin – given to the town in 1926 also increased the town popularity. As many as 11339 patients were noted between April, 1929 and March, 1930.
