The local curative mineral water springs, examined and described as early as 1601, were he beginning of spa treatment activities, and the foundation of the first sanatorium facilities. In 1816, Szczawno was officially recognised as a health resort. The curative waters, mild in flavour, are mainly bicarbonate-sodium-calcium-magnesium oxalates, known under the names of "Mieszko", "Dabrówka", "Mlynarz" and "Marta".

It is one of the very few spas offering child and youth care (from 6 to 18 years old). There is also a possibility of accommodating children with their guarians. They run their primary and junior high school.
