The first record of Bardejov Spa dates back to the year 1247, when Hungary´s King Bela IV bequeathed the territory of the present-day spa, together with its springs, to the town of Bardejov. It is certain that people learned about the healing effects of mineral waters early In 1895, the Empress Elizabeth, wife of Franz Joseph I, took treatments here. After her stay, the Bardejov Spa became a place attracting gatherings of Hungarian nobles. Its facilities included modern water treatments and technical equipment.
This precise geographical location and climate are important underpinnings for successful treatments in any season of the year.
With growing knowledge, the initial broad scale of disorders treated gradually narrowed to the point where they focussed on disorders of the digestive
system, non-specific upper respiratory problems, and conditions resulting from total physical and psychic exhaustion. Drinking cures and balneology have recently been complemented by physical treatments, use of medications, exercise and other effective methods.
on and were able to enjoy their use.
The earliest precise information is from the 15th century. The good reputation of the mineral springs spread quickly and, as a result, in 1505, small cabins were built for bathing the sick people coming from far and wide. In 1777, a 12-room structure was erected near the springs for the convenience of the sick. The curative powers of the springs attracted Hungarian and Polish nobles, which was of great importance for the spa´s development.
The visits by important and valued guests have always been a good promotion for the spa. The number of visitors reached a peak in the 1840´s, when it was some 1,000 per year, making the spa the third or fourth most-used spa in Hungary, including Slovakia. Most of the more important spa buildings - the Dukla, the Al_beta and the Astória - were erected toward the end of the 19th century.
Nowadays, Bardejov Spa, Inc., has at its disposal a total of 1,250 beds divided among the spa hotels OZÓN, ASTÓRIA and FRANTIŠEK, with their

at the spa will appreciate. An experience that can´t be missed is a walk in the spa parks and along the forest trails in the area, as well as in the nearby
surroundings. No less of interest is the social life, with lots of cultural and sport activities appropriate for every guest.
The charm of Bardejov Spa may be small with respect to the size of the area it occupies, but is immensely rich with respect to its history and its
record of successes in healing. Having visited it once, a guest will return again and again. The best way to find out that Bardejov Spa is an oasis of
peace and quiet is to come and experience it in person.
Bardejov mineral waters are natural, slightly to moderately mineralized, with healing effects. They are classified as hydrocarbonic - containing chloride and sodium - carbonic, cold, hypotonic, with a relatively high boric acid content. The drinking therapy /in Bardejov Spa/ is considered to be among the most important spa healing treatments. The water from 8 mineral springs is used for this therapy. The patient takes this therapy directly at the spring in the colonnade in time periods (morning, noon, evening), amount, temperature and application mode prescribed by the attending doctor. The effect of drinking therapies may be clearly noticed especially when the patient suffers from illnesses of stomach, gall bladder and bile ducts, liver, pancreas and intestines. The success of the therapy is assured by a long-term repeated drinking of acertain kind and amount of mineral water according to the doctor’s
instructions.
From the medical point of view, these mineral waters increase the gastric fluids creation or their neutralisation. Their choleretic and cholekinetic impacts improve the absorption during digestion. The particular minerals that are present in the healing water of Bardejov Spa have positive impacts when treating diseases of digestive organs.
Healing water is unique by the fact it has wide variability and therefore various possibilities of application as well. Based on chemical analysis of mineral waters from the individual springs as well as scientific justification and long-termed experience, local waters are used according to a type and character of disease either by internal balneal therapy or external balneal therapy , which is carried out in a complex sanatorium called Kupelny dom (Spa House) . Healing effect is reached by repeated drinking of a certain amount of healing water within longer time and as per physician’s prescription.
Quality of mineral waters and their balneal-therapeutic affects were considered based on the content of the main elements of physical and chemical substances and dissolved gases only. With progress in biochemistry it has been shown that trace elements are very important for human body and many processes in it, which gives water suitable application during treatment of diseases that use other healing procedures and steps.
According to the present state of medical theory and practice, spa treatment in Bardejov Spa is indicated against diseases and conditions that are recorded in high and exceptionally massive occurrence.
