The first written record about the Bojnice thermal springs is preserved in the document of the King Koloman. It dates back to the year 1113 and was filed at the Zobor Abbay. The thermal springs in Bojnice are mentioned in this document as fons fervidus (hot springs). As early as this time the spa with its springs was used for curative treatment.
The Bojnice Castle has come a long way in its rich history, from its beginnings at the time of the reign of the King Koloman through the times of monarchs following him: Bela IV, Matus Cak Trenciansky, Jan Korvin, the Thurzo and Palfy families. From among these feudals and owners of the castle Alex Thurzo from Betlanovce was the first who founded the spa in the first half of the 16th century. The first written record about the Bojnice Spa dates back to the year 1549. Its author Juraj Werhner describes it as water tanks with varied temperature of water. After the reconstruction of the Spa by Pavol Palffy the document from the year 1671 says that there were five pools under one roof in the Bojnice Spa... The best bath pool was built up from stone, the other pools were from wood, but they were also nice and clean.
on and were able to enjoy their use.
The earliest precise information is from the 15th century. The good reputation of the mineral springs spread quickly and, as a result, in 1505, small cabins were built for bathing the sick people coming from far and wide. In 1777, a 12-room structure was erected near the springs for the convenience of the sick. The curative powers of the springs attracted Hungarian and Polish nobles, which was of great importance for the spa´s development.
The visits by important and valued guests have always been a good promotion for the spa. The number of visitors reached a peak in the 1840´s, when it was some 1,000 per year, making the spa the third or fourth most-used spa in Hungary, including Slovakia. Most of the more important spa buildings - the Dukla, the Al_beta and the Astória - were erected toward the end of the 19th century.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries another reconstruction of the Spa and the castle was accomplished by the lat owner of the castle - the count Jan Palffy. Modern development of the Spa began in the thirties of the 20th century, when the owner of the Spa was Jan Bata.
Bojnice aquired the statute of the spa town on 17 June 1959. Since that time the spa treatment has been provided not only for the home patients but also for the patients from abroad.
